At Kingsley Primary School, we are passionate about the vital role systematic synthetic phonics plays in enabling our children to become confident readers, within our rich reading programme. Phonics at Kingsley Primary School follows the Department for Education approved document ‘Letters and Sounds’. This enables our phonics teaching and learning to be progressive from Reception to Year 2 as well as allowing for creativity in planning and delivery. In Reception, phonics is taught as soon as children start school, through whole class teaching inputs and small group activities. As the children progress into Year 1 and 2, phonics is taught in small groups dependent on children’s prior phonics knowledge. Where extra support is needed, this is identified quickly and targeted intervention is provided to ensure that all children reach their full potential.
