Year 1 Miss Cox
KS1 Singing Assembly
During this term we have begun to learn the song 'Sing' by Gary Barlow and the commonwealth band. The children have asked that I add this to their class page so that they can learn and practise it at home. We hope you enjoy it!! Miss Cox :)
The children really enjoyed playing this yes/no Yeti game and asked me to add it to our class page so that they can play it at home.
On Wednesday 6th March Mrs Turner and Miss Cox will be running a phonics workshop for all parents about the upcoming Phonics Screening Check. We would like to encourage as many of you as possible to attend as the information shared is very important.
Both sessions will be help in the studio in the KS2 building at 9.10 - 9.30 or 3.20-3.40.
During this term we have been learning all about our number bonds to 20. We learnt some top tips to help us remember our number bonds.
Our Top Tips
- All calculations apart from 10+10 have a single digit number and a 2 digit number.
- We can use our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help us. i.e. 7 + 3 = 10. If you has a ten to one of these numbers it will be a number bond to 20.
- All number bonds to 20 have a number with 1 ten.
Our Science topic this term is 'Everyday objects and the materials they are made from'. Why not go on a material hunt in and around your home. Ask your child to name the object they have found and identify the material it is made from. We have learnt that most things are generally made from at least two materials.
The materials we have mainly been focussing on are wood/plastic/glass/fabric/metal/water
Here are some links to websites and songs we have been exploring in class:
As we progress through this unit the children will go on to explore the properties of materials and their purpose.
Counting in 2's, 5's and 10's.
During our maths lessons, we have begun learning how to count in 2's, 5's and 10's. We have been learning to counting in these ways through the use of songs. In year one, we have found that learning through song helps us to remember new concepts in a fun way. The children have particularly enjoyed some of the videos we watched and requested that I put them onto our class page, so that they could share them with you at home. We hope you enjoy learning these songs with your child. If you find any others that you think would be great to share in class, please let me know!
In appreciation of black history month, the children have been fortunate enough to take part in an African Drumming session. We learn about different instruments from around the world and we all had the chance to play some drums. The instructor taught us three different ways to play the drums and that these created different sounds.
Wow what an amazing start to Year 1!!!
The children have thoroughly enjoyed our topic this term and have enjoyed retelling the story of 'The Elves and the Shoemaker'. They have really impressed me with their ability to rewrite the story and remember all the parts of the story. It has been wonderful getting to know all of the children's characters and personalities this term and understanding them all as individual learners. I am incredibly pleased how well they have settled into year 1 and the challenges they have been set.
To end our term with a little extra sparkle the children have 'Elf themselves' with their group of friends. Please enjoy their videos below. I am sure you will all smile and no doubt chuckle at their videos.
I am already looking forward to seeing you all next term.
Have a happy, safe half term.
We were very excited to welcome a visitor from the Northampton shoe museum on Wednesday 3rd October who talked to us about shoes from the past. The children particularly enjoyed learning about a shoe called poulaine ( pronounced poo lanes - which the children found very hilarious!)
The children also loved having the opportunity to try on the shoes and share them with their friends! We had a wonderful afternoon of shoes!
In year 1 we have been learning about numbers and understanding their value. To help us remember teen numbers and that they have 1 ten followed by the units we have learnt a song to help us understand. Maybe your child could teach you at home!
We were very excited to be learning all about Christopher Columbus today. Initially we learnt about his adventured and the brave voyage he took to find America. We then worked in groups to create still images of significant parts of his story.
